What are the Materials Commonly Used to Manufacture Hydraulic Seals?

When used in industrial applications, hydraulic seals are exposed to different temperature ranges, high pressures, irritating liquids and chemicals. In order to provide reliable performance in critical environments, they should be manufactured using quality-tested raw materials. Since the quality of raw materials determines the durability of the final product to a large extent, it is important to choose materials carefully.

Let me introduce you to the four main polymer material groups commonly used in the manufacture of hydraulic seals.
Hydraulic seal manufacturing-material selection

Manufacturers of hydraulic seals rely on the materials listed below to produce seals, which can be used for a long time under pressure and have a longer service life.

Thermoplastic Elastomers: Polyurethane (PU) and Thermoplastic Polyester Elastomers (TPC) are suitable for the production of seals because they have:

1) Excellent chemical resistance and hydrolysis resistance.

2) Good extrusion resistance.

3) Excellent wear resistance and pressure resistance.

4) Easy to install.

5) Excellent elasticity and flexibility.

Rubber:  Commonly used options in this category include nitrile rubber (NBR), hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR), fluorocarbon rubber (FKM, FPM). They were selected because they:

1) Can withstand a variety of hydraulic fluids.

2) Suitable for a wide temperature range.

3) Shows excellent weather resistance and UV resistance.

4) Shows excellent abrasion resistance.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): PTFE and its compounds have many superior properties, making them a suitable choice for the production of hydraulic seals. They are widely accepted because they:

1) Shows excellent chemical resistance.

2) Shows a low coefficient of friction.

3) Has good wear resistance or extrusion resistance.

Thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics: When it is necessary to produce seals with excellent mechanical strength, thermoplastics, thermosetting plastics and their composite materials are the best choice. They are favored to a large extent because they demonstrate:

1) Very high hardness and rigidity.

2) Good chemical resistance.

3) Excellent friction properties.

Choosing the right sealing material is very important, because it determines the overall quality and durability of the hydraulic seal.
